Michael Van Ewijk was born in the Netherlands in 1950 and emigrated to Australia with his family when he was an infant. He grew up under the influence of his father who was a well known book illustrator and painter in the Netherlands.
His working life has revolved around art, teaching art and photography for 24 years. Fifteen years ago he left teaching to work freelance as a commercial photographer specializing in landscape and wilderness images. He works regularly for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service producing large format wilderness images for their signage. As keen bush walker he has combined his love of the Australian landscape with his professional work. This along with a number of trips overseas has enabled him to build up a unique collection of images.
Michael says of his work: “When I am out in the field working I search for unusual compositions and angles that interest me rather than producing just ‘safe’ images. This approach shapes all my photography even my commercial work. For me the composition and the quality of the ambient light are paramount provided the meaning of the image is not compromised.”
