The Organ Pipes. These dolerite columns originated 1.6 billion years ago as a subterranean lake of deep-source lava. As the lava cooled and solidified, shrinkage at the surface cracked in a regular pattern, and as cooling proceeded, the surface cracking extended downward to form this densely packed forest of columns.
